Hay prices in South Dakota this week: USDA report, per ton

Source: USDA AMS South Dakota Direct Hay Report, published Fri 4 Sep 2026, for the week ending 4 Sep 2026 (PDF). 4 price lines, all confirmed trades, 0 of them priced per bale. Confirmed hay volume this week: 625 tons. South Dakota's report is not published every week; this is the latest one USDA has published. USDA market comment: "Good to very good demand for all classes of hay. Best demand is coming from western South Dakota where the drought has been severe and little hay was made this year. Grass hay supplies are limited as the weather wasn't conducive to growing grass as it was dry during April and May. Drought has gripped the eastern side of the state as well, some areas are very short and made substantially less hay than normal, while in others spots the alfalfa produced pretty well." For scale, USDA NASS's monthly state average for August 2026 was $99.00/ton for all hay (alfalfa $101.00, other hay $90.00; US all hay $190.00) (NASS Agricultural Prices, 29 Sep 2026). Qty is tons for per-ton rows and bales for per-bale rows. Trade and Contract rows are confirmed sales; Ask and Offer rows are quoted prices, not sales.
