What hay sold for this week in 20 US states, per bale and per ton

Hay prices in Montana this week: USDA report, per ton

Source: USDA AMS Montana Direct Hay Report, published Fri 2 Oct 2026, for the week ending 2 Oct 2026 (PDF). 6 price lines, all confirmed trades, 0 of them priced per bale. Confirmed hay volume this week: 805 tons. USDA market comment: "Compared to last report(9-18-26): Hay sold generally steady. Demand for hay is mostly moderate to good. Supplies are mostly moderate. Demand for hay has lightened some as fall rains have helped improve late season grazing conditions in some locations. Some locations are putting up 3rd and 4th cuttings as warm weather and late season rains have allowed for additional cuttings. Many report strong yields on 3rd cutting especially in western and central Montana. Hay in the northern half of the state remains a discount to southern hay as sellers compete with hay coming out of Canada and across highway 2 from North Dakota." For scale, USDA NASS's monthly state average for August 2026 was $215.00/ton for all hay (alfalfa $220.00, other hay $190.00; US all hay $190.00) (NASS Agricultural Prices, 29 Sep 2026). Qty is tons for per-ton rows and bales for per-bale rows. Trade and Contract rows are confirmed sales; Ask and Offer rows are quoted prices, not sales.
