Timber prices in West Virginia, July 2026: WVU stumpage baseline
Source: West Virginia Stumpage Price Report, JUL 2026, WVU Appalachian Hardwood Center, published semi-annually with January 2026 in the archive (timberprices.wvu.edu). Read the method first: this is a research baseline, not a survey of sales. The page's own words: "These values represent general estimates for typical West Virginia conditions based on WVU Appalachian Hardwood Center (AHC) research of logs using the Doyle Log Rule. The values above are market baselines based on statewide averages. This is not a guaranteed appraisal." The baseline is a break-even stumpage value per species derived from log research after baseline logging ($200/MBF), trucking ($100/MBF) and sawing ($250/MBF) costs, and "do not account for profit on the part of the stumpage purchaser (logger or mill)"; less common species are assigned $25/MBF. The page is an interactive calculator that adjusts the baseline for tract conditions; the table shows the standard statewide figure in dollars per MBF Doyle. West Virginia has no state-agency stumpage survey; WVU Extension explains stumpage on its What is stumpage page.
